DYSTOPIAN EXHIBITION

Brief

Over the years a multitude of different ideas about the future have adapted and changed. The disscussion of futuristic outcomes has been going on since the 16th century, from then until now there are still re- occuring ideas and narratives of how the future may unfold.

I had to design an exhibition experience exploring Utopian and Dystopian themes of the past and present. There are different dystopian films either past or present that take the audience on a journey through each space and time.

The prospect of the exhibition is to have people leaving more open minded about the future, thinking whether some of these perspectives may become reality.

Aims

  • To take 6 dystopian films and convey their different interpretations of the future in snippet's of film clips in theatre rooms.

  • To convey the different futuristic interpretations in a minimal and simplistic manor to make them clear to understand for all ages.

About

  • This project was really interesting to research as the brief explored the unique futuristic themes of  Utopian & Dystopian.

  • Tasked to create an exhibition exploring the dystopian themes of films to express different  potential futuristic outcomes within society and what the impacts could be and look like.

Inspiration

Made in the initial research stage of this project. Understanding the dystopian theme and presentation through film concepts set in the distant future, predicting numerous societal outcomes whether post apocalyptic,  AI or extraterrestrial etc. By constructing a theme board helped me understand key concepts used and commonly viewed /presented to society through the film industry. This then allowed me to select the concepts I thought were visually interesting and all different to provide a variation of potential futures.

Development:

Material Palette:

Consolidating colour, materials and flora creating visual image of potential space within the building. This palette is representative of the spa highlighting qualities each aspect contributes to fulfil a health and well-being sanctuary.

Plans

Ground & Basement Plans:

Renders:

Providing a 3D visual of the space conveying material choices, furniture and people for scale. In a real life project visuals are a great way to show a client the potential final outcome of their design criteria as they often struggle to see their ideas envisioned.

Sketches

Futurist architecture is an early 20th century form of architecture originating in Italy. This movement is characterised by strong chromaticism, long dynamic lines, suggesting speed, motion, urgency and lyricism: it was a part of Futurism, an artistic movement founded by the poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

Futurism is the first movement that’s considered an avant-garde movement. Typically reinforced concrete is the recognised building material of Brutalist architecture but other materials such as brick, glass, steel, and rough-hewn stone may also be used. Brutalist architecture is percived as bold, brash and unconventional. When built they were symbols of power.

This movement is affilated with dystopian films due to their gritty, postwar, urbanised, industrial nature. Providing perhaps a cold, bleak future symbolising lack of hope from use of concrete.

Below is a futuristic film board to consolidate potential outcomes of the futures in different times, universes and classifications (e.g. post apocalyptic ). From this I narrowed down my choices for the dystopian exhibition.
